Landscapes and Animals

Sweetser students work on paintings of animals and landscapes. They explored bright colors and textures and got some amazing results!

Paper Mache Masks and Vases

The students had the opportunity to work with paper mache this year! They took strips of newspaper and dipped them in mache paste (flour, salt, water) and wrapped them around balloons and recycled bowls to make vases or a mask shaped cast. After letting them dry, the students decorated them and even put some of the masks to use!

Symphony in Color

The Symphony in Color contest is another opportunity that the students have to integrate their artwork with a subject outside of the visual arts. We had multiple students receive first place, second place, and honorable mention ribbons! Here are a few of the finalists, way to go students, we are so proud of you!

Holiday Artwork

It's holiday time! The students had the opportunity to fill long pieces of paper with any media, glitter, and other decorations in order to celebrate whatever holiday festivity they wanted!

Purdue Bug Bowl Contest

Every year, Purdue University invites elementary students around Indiana to submit drawings of bugs to a contest entitled "The Bug Bowl". The students are allowed to use any media they want, use any subject matter that they want, and any expressive style that they want. This is a great opportunity for the students to integrate art with an outside subject! Here are some of the district wide pieces that were selected to be sent to the Bug Bowl to be judged!

Clay Art

The Swayzee Elementary students take a stab at 3D art by working with clay! Each of the students had the freedom to create whatever they wanted out of the clay body, and finished off the pieces with brightly colored paints, feathers, jewels, and some googley eyes. The finished products also gave the students a chance to try mixed media!

Graffiti Art

During this project, students had the opportunity to creat their own expressive graffiti art! Mediums include marker, watercolor, pencil, sharpie, and crayon all on large landscape paper.

Paleolithic Cave Art

After taking time to study Paleolithic Cave art and learning about the different symbols, techniques, and artworks of cave men, students had the opportunity to make their own cave art! After working hard on their cave paintings, the paper was rolled up into a tunnel so the kids could crawl through their artwork, an experience similar to actual cave people.
